I noticed that when I eat a high protein breakfast like eggs and ham I am full until lunch but if I eat a bagel I am hungry an hour later. I have been reading that protein is the most satiating macro and I think it is making a huge difference in my cut.

I am trying to get 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight and it is definitely helping me stay in my calorie deficit. I am much less likely to snack in the evening if I have had a big protein rich dinner.

Do you guys find that protein helps you stay on track? I am curious if anyone has had success with lower protein diets or if you all agree that protein is king for fat loss. I am in the US and I am finally starting to see some real progress now that I have made this change.

That is the classic insulin spike from the bagel mate. Protein takes much longer to break down in the gut and it triggers the release of peptide YY which tells your brain you are actually full. It is the gold standard for weight management.

I call that the "Bagel Trap." You eat it, feel great for 20 minutes, then want to eat your own arm by 10am. Since I bumped my protein to 1.2g per pound, I don't even think about snacking anymore.

I noticed this too with my kids. If they have sugary cereal, they're grumpy and hungry in an hour. If we do Greek yogurt and eggs, they're good until lunch. Protein leverage is a real thing.

Anyone else find that too much protein makes them almost "too" full? Sometimes I struggle to hit my calorie goals on a bulk because 250g of chicken just sits in my stomach like a brick.

Wish I had that problem, Dave! I'm a volume eater so I need all the protein I can get to stop me from raiding the biscuit tin. It's definitely the most satiating macro for me, followed by fiber.

Totally agree with NorthernLass. Fiber is the secret weapon when combined with protein. Try adding some spinach or broccoli to those eggs and you won't want to see food for six hours.

So it's not just in my head! What about protein shakes? I find they don't keep me full nearly as long as solid food like steak or eggs.

Liquid calories always digest faster Henry. The mechanical act of chewing and the time it takes for solid protein to denature in the stomach acids plays a huge part in satiety signals.

Yep. Shakes are for convenience or post-workout. If you're hungry, eat a steak. In Texas, we call that the breakfast of champions anyway.

Does the source of protein matter? Like, is 30g from whey as satiating as 30g from soy or beef?

In my experience, animal proteins are way more satiating. Casein is particularly good because it gels up in the stomach. I usually have some before bed so I don't wake up hungry.

I find white fish is the worst for satiety even though it's pure protein. I can eat a pound of cod and feel hungry 30 minutes later. Beef or eggs definitely last longer.

That's likely because white fish is so lean. You need a bit of fat to slow down gastric emptying. A fatty cut of salmon or adding some butter to the cod might help.

Spot on. Protein is king for satiety, but it works best in the presence of some fats and fiber. It is the holy trinity of staying full while cutting.

What do y'all think about the "Protein Leverage Hypothesis"? The idea that we keep eating until we hit a specific protein target regardless of calories?

I think it's 100% true. If I eat chips or crackers, I can go through a whole bag because my body is searching for nutrients. If I eat jerky, I stop after a few pieces.

This explains why I can eat a whole large pizza and still want dessert. Barely any protein in that relative to the carbs and fat.

Exactly Henry! You're just chasing the protein signal while drowning in refined flour.

I read a study saying protein has a higher Thermic Effect of Food (TEF) too. Like 20-30% of the calories are burned just digesting it. That's a nice bonus.
