I'm just starting out in Ohio and I'm terrified of the bench press area. It's always full of guys. Any tips for a total newbie on how to claim a spot without feeling like an intruder?

@MidwestMaisy honestly, the best thing is to just walk in like you own the place! Most of the lads are actually quite sound and will stay out of your way. If you're really nervous, try going at an 'off-peak' time or bring a mate for backup.

Checking in from BC! My wife had the same fear. She started with dumbbell chest presses on a regular bench first to build confidence before moving to the big barbell rack. Might be a good middle ground?

Dumbbells are actually harder in some ways because you have to stabilize each arm! But Dave is right, it feels way less intimidating than being under the bar.

Spot on. Also, remember that everyone in that room started exactly where you are. Most people are too busy looking at their own 'colour' in the mirror to judge yours!

Has anyone noticed that their 'heavy' changes so fast? I went from 5lb curls to 20lbs in like two months. The 'newbie gains' are real, ladies. Don't sell yourself short by sticking to the pink weights.

Thanks for the encouragement! I actually went today and did some overhead presses with 10lb dumbbells. Felt like a total badass even though it's small potatoes compared to you guys.

Question for the group: do you find your grip strength is the limiting factor? My back can handle heavier rows but my hands just give up. Should I buy some straps?

I use straps for my top sets! There is no shame in it. If your goal is a strong back, don't let your grip hold you back. You can work on grip separately with farmer's carries.
