I am torn between starting strength vs stronglifts 5x5 for muscle growth and I cannot decide which one to commit to this month. They both seem so similar but people on Reddit argue about them constantly.

I want to get bigger and stronger, obviously. Stronglifts has that app which seems really handy for tracking, but Starting Strength seems to have more of a cult following for a reason.

I am based in the UK and my gym has plenty of power racks, so I am ready to go. I just do not want to waste time on a suboptimal program.

Has anyone tried both? Which one gave you better results in terms of actual mirror changes rather than just the numbers on the bar? I am worried 5x5 might be too much volume once the weights get heavy.

Hey EssexLad99, this is a classic beginner dilemma! Both Starting Strength and StrongLifts 5x5 are fantastic programs for muscle growth and strength building for novices. The biggest difference often comes down to personal preference and how your body responds to volume. SS has less volume per workout but higher intensity, while SL5x5 uses more sets per exercise. Pick one and stick with it for at least 12 weeks. Consistency is king! πŸ’ͺ

@CoachCelestine, I completely agree that consistency is key. Far too many beginners jump from program to program without giving one a proper chance. What would you say is a good indicator that someone might need to switch or adjust one of these programs, rather than just sticking with it?

I have run both programs back in the day. For pure strength gains, I felt Starting Strength edged out SL5x5 slightly because of the focus on 3x5 and linear progression. However, for a bit more hypertrophy, the 5x5 scheme of StrongLifts might give you a slightly better pump. Either way, you will get strong. Do not overthink it too much! Just lift heavy and eat well. πŸ₯©

@AnimalLifter, that is interesting to hear about your experience with SS for strength and SL for hypertrophy. I always thought they were more or less interchangeable in that regard. Did you notice a significant difference in how quickly you hit plateaus on either?

It is not just about the lifting, remember to factor in your nutrition and recovery! No matter if you pick SS or SL5x5, if you are not eating enough protein and getting enough sleep, your muscle growth will be severely limited. Fuel your body for the work you are doing. πŸ˜΄πŸ—

Whichever you choose, get the form down first. Watch videos, read the books, and maybe even get a coach for a few sessions. Lifting with bad form is not only inefficient for muscle growth but also a fast track to injury. Form over weight always! ⚠️

@Droz, you are absolutely right! I have seen so many people try to rush the weight and end up hurting themselves. A solid foundation in technique makes all the difference for long term progress. πŸ’―

Why not try Starting Strength for 6-8 weeks, and then switch to StrongLifts 5x5 for another 6-8 weeks? You will get a feel for both and can then decide which one you prefer or which one gives you better results. There is no rule saying you have to marry the first program you try. Experiment! πŸ€”

@jimmywells1988, that is actually a great suggestion for a true beginner who is undecided. It allows for direct comparison without a huge long-term commitment. My only caveat would be to ensure they understand the deload/reset principles for each if they switch.

One key difference people often overlook is the volume of accessory work. SS is very minimalist, focusing purely on the big lifts. SL5x5 also has minimal accessory work, but the 5x5 scheme itself is higher volume than 3x5. Consider if you want to add more isolation work later; SL might transition better, or you can just add it to either. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

@philosopher, good point about the volume. The higher volume of SL5x5 can definitely lead to more soreness initially, which some people equate to more growth, even if it is just inflammation. For muscle growth, more sets generally help, so SL might have a slight edge here for pure beginners. πŸ’ͺπŸ”₯

Once someone has completed either SS or SL5x5 for a good few months and stalled, what is usually the next step in terms of programming for continued muscle growth? I am thinking ahead for when I eventually hit that wall. πŸ“ˆ

EssexLad99, the best program is the one you will actually do consistently and enjoy. Both SS and SL5x5 are proven, effective ways to build a foundation. Do not get caught in analysis paralysis. Pick one, commit, learn proper form, and give it your all. You will see results either way! ❀️

@RockyBuilder, that is the truth right there! So many people spend weeks researching when they could be spending those weeks lifting. Just start! πŸ™Œ

Whatever you choose, make sure to track your lifts! Use an app, a notebook, anything. Seeing your progress numerically is incredibly motivating and also helps you know when to push harder or when you might be stalling. You cannot manage what you do not measure. πŸ“

@PumpChaser, totally agree with tracking. I use a simple Excel sheet for my SL5x5. It is so satisfying to see the numbers go up each week! Also helps prevent ego lifting by keeping you honest about your last session. πŸ˜‚

Be prepared for plateaus. They will happen. Both programs have built-in mechanisms for deloads or intensity changes. Do not be discouraged when you cannot add weight every single session. That is normal and part of the process. Trust the program! 🧐

@BigArvin, excellent advice on plateaus. Many beginners quit when they hit their first one. Understanding that it is part of the journey and how to work through it is crucial for long-term success. Sometimes just a good deload week is all you need to come back stronger. πŸ’ͺ

It is easy to get overwhelmed with all the information out there, especially for beginners. Just remember that both Starting Strength and StrongLifts 5x5 are designed to simplify the process and get you lifting effectively. You cannot go wrong with either choice as a starting point. Choose the one that excites you more!

@Zigurd, that is a kind and helpful perspective. EssexLad99, do not let the internet arguments scare you off. The best way to learn is by doing. Good luck with your training, whichever you pick! You got this! πŸš€
