I am doing a performance review of the Nike Metcon 9 versus the TYR L-1 lifter. I have been using the Metcons for my daily training in Ottawa but I recently bought the TYR lifters specifically for my heavy squat sessions. The difference in stability is night and day.

The TYR L-1 has an incredibly wide toe box which allows my feet to splay out naturally. I feel so much more connected to the floor than I ever did in the Metcons. The Metcons are obviously better for a varied workout but for pure strength the TYR shoes are winning for me right now.

Has anyone else made the switch to TYR recently? I know they are a newer player in the lifting shoe market but they seem to be making some great gear. I am curious to see how the durability holds up after a year of heavy use. Let me know your thoughts!

Really interested to hear your full thoughts, OP! I've been eyeing the TYR L-1s for a while but wasn't sure if they're worth the jump from Metcons for dedicated lifting days. My Metcon 8s feel solid, but sometimes I want that extra stability.

@LiftHeavyUK I totally get that! The Metcons are versatile but sometimes you need something purpose-built. Curious to see if the TYRs really make a difference for max effort lifts.

@LiftHeavyUK The TYRs are definitely more specialised. If your lifting is getting serious, the investment in a dedicated lifter like the L-1 is generally worth it. You'll feel the ground so much better.

Glad someone's doing this comparison! I find my Metcon 9s are great for WODs but a bit squishy for my heavy Oly lifts. The TYRs look like they mean business. How do they compare for a wider foot?

@A4tech The wider foot question is key. Nike often runs a bit narrow for me. If TYR has a better toe box, that's a huge plus. My Metcon 9s pinch a bit on longer sessions.

I've heard the TYR L-1s are super stiff, which is what you want for lifting, but I'm worried about walking around the gym in them. Metcons are comfy for everything. Is the trade-off worth it?

I made the switch from Metcons to TYR L-1s about 6 months ago for my powerlifting. Best decision ever for squats and deadlifts. The stability is unmatched. But I still wear Metcons for conditioning work.

@Dragustav That's exactly what I suspected! Nice to hear from someone who's done the actual swap. Do you feel any difference in your squat depth or form because of the TYRs?

Honestly, the Metcons are overrated for serious lifting. They're good all-rounders, but when you're pushing heavy weight, you need a dedicated lifter. TYR is in a different league for stability.

@IronMaven I wouldn't say overrated, just different tools for different jobs. Metcons are fine for CrossFit, but for pure strength, a lifter is essential. Your point about stability is spot on.

I just bought some TYR L-1s after seeing so many pros using them. The build quality feels phenomenal. Haven't lifted in them yet, but first impressions are great. Hoping they live up to the hype.

@GymRatCanada Congrats on the new shoes! I've heard the same, they look solid. Let us know how that first session goes, really curious about the feel under load.

Has anyone tried running short distances in the TYRs? Like, from the car park to the gym? My Metcons are my everyday shoe too, trying to avoid bringing two pairs.

I wouldn't recommend running *any* distance in the TYR L-1s. They're stiff, heavy, and not designed for forward propulsion. You'll likely hurt your feet or just look silly.

The heel height difference between the two is also a factor. TYRs have a more significant heel for lifters, which is a game-changer for ankle mobility in squats. Metcons are flatter.

I'm still rocking my Metcon 7s and they're holding up great. I do mostly powerlifting now, so I'm thinking about making the switch. Is the TYR L-1 comfortable enough for an hour-long session?

For me, the Metcon 9s are perfect for everything. I don't lift super heavy, so the versatility is more important than that super rigid sole. Plus, they look better IMO.

@Natzo Aesthetics do matter, I agree! But I've found once you try a proper lifter, it's hard to go back for your heavy sets. Functionality over form, especially when PRs are on the line.

The TYR L-1 has a slightly higher effective heel than most Metcons, which can really help those with limited ankle dorsiflexion for deeper squats. It's a technical advantage.

TYR L-1s are surprisingly comfortable for a lifting shoe. Not walking-around-town comfortable, but for an hour or two in the gym, they're great. Way better than my old AdiPowers.

For anyone debating the TYRs, check out the reviews on YouTube. Many powerlifters and Oly lifters swear by them. They're often compared to the Romaleos 4, not Metcons.

I'm a big fan of the Metcon 9's durability. I beat mine up daily and they're still going strong. Can the TYRs stand up to that kind of abuse?

@CrossFitQueen TYR L-1s are built like tanks, arguably more durable than Metcons in terms of sole compression and upper wear from heavy lifting. They're not for rope climbs, though!

My coach recommends dedicated lifting shoes for anything over 80% 1RM. Metcons are fine for warmups and accessory work, but for the main lifts, a lifter is safer and more effective.

I've got both. Metcon 9 for CrossFit and general gym. TYR L-1 for my heavy squat and snatch days. They complement each other perfectly. If you can only get one, Metcon wins for versatility.

@DualShoeDiva I'm on the fence about getting dedicated lifters. Your point about versatility with Metcons is what keeps me from pulling the trigger on the TYRs. Maybe for my birthday!

The grip on the TYR L-1s is insane. I feel absolutely planted on the platform, which gives me so much more confidence during deadlifts. Metcons feel a bit slippier by comparison on some surfaces.

I tried the TYRs and they just didn't suit my foot shape. Too narrow in the midfoot for me. Ended up sticking with my Romaleos 4. Fit is everything, really. Try them on if you can.

For anyone new to lifters, be prepared for an adjustment period. Your squats will feel different, usually better, but it's not always an instant PR. Your body needs to adapt to the new mechanics.

@NewbieCoach That's a great point. I remember my first time in lifters, my balance felt off initially but once I got used to the elevated heel, my squat depth improved dramatically. It's a learning curve.
