I wanted to start a thread about essential gym bag gear for new members because I see so many people showing up totally unprepared. I remember my first week when I forgot to bring a water bottle and had to use the fountain every five minutes.

Besides the basics like a towel and water, what are the things you cannot live without? I always keep a spare pair of socks and some liquid chalk in mine.

I am also a big fan of having a dedicated pair of shoes just for the gym. I hate seeing people walk in from the muddy streets of Vancouver and then get on the equipment with those same shoes.

Do you guys use logbooks or just your phones? I find that if I bring my phone I end up scrolling through Instagram instead of actually working out. Maybe a paper journal is an essential?

Totally agree with PumpChaser. A small towel is absolutely essential for wiping down machines and benches after you use them. It is basic gym etiquette that so many new people forget. Also good for your own sweat! πŸ˜…

I would add a good pair of headphones and a small padlock for the lockers. You do not want your phone falling off the treadmill or your wallet going missing. Both are peace of mind items. πŸŽ§πŸ”’

Hand sanitizer is a must for me! Especially after touching all the gym equipment. It is a quick way to feel a bit cleaner before you leave or touch your face. Hygiene is key! ✨

For anyone getting into serious lifting, a small bag of chalk can be a game changer for grip. Maybe some wrist wraps or lifting straps too, but those are a bit more advanced. Start with the basics first! πŸ’ͺ

A decent shaker bottle for your protein or pre-workout is way better than just a regular water bottle. Plus, they often have compartments for supplements. Very handy! πŸ‘

Do not forget a post-workout snack! Your body needs fuel to recover, and waiting until you get home can sometimes be too long. A protein shake and a banana are my go-to items. 🍌πŸ₯€

Good quality shoes are seriously overlooked. Running shoes for cardio, flatter soles for lifting. It makes a huge difference to your stability and injury prevention. Invest in your feet! πŸ‘Ÿ

@IronMaiden_CA, absolutely spot on about footwear! It is not just about comfort; it is about proper form and avoiding injury, especially when you are starting out. Flat shoes for lifting are a game changer. πŸ’―

@Natzo, I agree on the chalk for grip, but I would caution new members about jumping straight to straps. It is important to build natural grip strength first before relying on accessories. Good advice on the basics though! πŸ™Œ

Deodorant! And a small toiletry kit if you plan on showering at the gym. Nothing worse than feeling sticky and smelly after a workout. Freshness counts! 🧼

@CoachCelestine, what are some of your favorite quick post-workout snacks besides a banana? I am always looking for new ideas for when I am on the go! πŸ€”

Always carry a spare change of clothes or at least a fresh t-shirt. You do not want to be stuck in sweaty gear, especially if you have errands to run afterwards. Comfortable clothes are key!πŸ‘•

Do not forget to bring a positive attitude and a clear goal! Your gym bag holds the physical tools, but your mind holds the mental ones. Stay motivated! πŸš€

For those with long hair, a hair tie or clip is a lifesaver. Nothing worse than hair getting in your face during a heavy set. Also, a small resistance band can be brilliant for dynamic warm-ups or glute activation before leg day. πŸ”₯

@jimmywells1988, great question! Besides bananas, I often recommend rice cakes with a smear of peanut butter, or a high-quality protein bar. Dried fruit and nuts can also work in a pinch, but watch the sugar content. The key is quickly digestible carbs and protein! πŸ₯œ

A tiny first-aid kit can be a good idea for new members. Think blister plasters, a small pain reliever, and maybe some antiseptic wipes. Accidents happen, and it is better to be prepared! 🩹

@Dragustav, that is a great point! The mental game is half the battle. If you show up with the right mindset, you are already winning. Consistency starts with attitude. πŸ’ͺ🧠
