Best Competition Tanning Products Review 2026
I just received my order of Jan Tana and Pro Tan for my competition in Toronto next month. I am doing a trial run this weekend because I am worried about how the colour will react with my skin tone. I have heard horror stories about guys turning green or looking way too dark under the stage lights.
In the past I have used Liquid Sun Rayz and it was decent but I want that professional mahogany look this time. Does anyone have tips for the exfoliation process in the weeks leading up? I am using a ph balanced skin primer but I am not sure if I should shave or use a hair removal cream like Nair for the final prep.
Also how many coats do you usually find is necessary for a physique category? I do not want to lose my definition because the tan is too thick. If you have a preferred brand or application method for 2026 please let me know so I can adjust my plan.
Good shout on the trial run, MapleLeafFan. Always do one, especially if it's your first time or a new product. Different skin tones react wildly different. Make sure you exfoliate properly before the trial!
^ What TanningGuru said. Exfoliation is KEY. Don't skip it, even if you feel like your skin is already smooth. It helps the tan adhere evenly and prevents streaks. I usually use a loofah and a gentle scrub for a few days leading up to the trial.
I've had mixed results with both Jan Tana and Pro Tan. Jan Tana tends to pull a bit green on my fair skin, even with multiple coats. Pro Tan works better for me, but it's a pain to apply evenly sometimes. Anyone else struggle with undertones?
Regardless of the brand, always, always, ALWAYS get someone to help you with your back. There's nothing worse than getting to the show and realizing you've got a massive pale patch you couldn't reach. Trust me on this one.
Honestly, if you're looking for a dark, deep colour that lasts and doesn't streak, check out Liquid Sun Rayz. It's a bit pricier but the results are consistent. I've used it for my last three shows and won't go back.
Are the super expensive brands really that much better? I'm on a tight budget for my first show, and I'm wondering if I can get away with a slightly cheaper option if my conditioning is spot on. Thoughts?
Hey MapleLeafFan, how did your trial run go this weekend? Any insights on how the Jan Tana or Pro Tan reacted with your skin? Super curious to hear!
@CanuckMuscle is right. Your tan makes or breaks your stage presence. It's not just about colour, it's about how it makes your muscles POP under the lights. A cheap tan can look flat and muddy. Spend the extra cash, it's worth the investment for competition day.
Don't forget the showering process leading up to it. Last shower should be 24 hours before your first coat, no soap, just rinse. And don't moisturise for at least 24 hours before the first coat either! Let your skin be dry.
@FlexFanatic, good point on the moisturiser! But be careful what kind of moisturiser you use in the days *before* the 24-hour cut-off. Some contain mineral oils or petroleum that can block the tan from absorbing later, even after rinsing. Opt for oil-free lotions.
Unpopular opinion: Tanning products are overrated. Your conditioning and posing are far more important. A perfect tan won't hide poor muscle separation. Focus on getting peeled, the tan is just a minor detail.
@GymRatJoe, I have to respectfully disagree. While conditioning is king, a bad tan can absolutely detract from even the best physique. It's not just a 'minor detail' – it highlights all your hard work. Judges need to see the striations and cuts, and a good tan makes them visible. It's part of the package.
Okay, so for a classic physique competition, which do you guys prefer for a rich, dark, non-orange colour? Jan Tana or Pro Tan? I'm torn between the two.
@SweatSeshGal, I've used both extensively. For classic, I lean towards Jan Tana. It gives a really deep, almost mahogany tone that looks incredible under stage lights without pulling red or orange. Just make sure to get the top coat.
@PumpKing, definitely on the faster drying with Pro Tan. That's a huge plus when you're doing multiple coats backstage and time is tight. Nothing worse than feeling tacky right before going on.
Random but effective tip: if you're doing your own back and don't have help, use a paint roller with an extended handle. It works surprisingly well for getting an even coating!
@LiftLover, a paint roller?! Haha, that's genius! I've been contorting myself into pretzels trying to get my back even. I'm actually going to try that for my next trial run. Thanks for the tip!
