Starting Strength is a fantastic program. I have been running it for about 6 months now here in Houston. Seeing some great gains, especially on my squat and deadlift. Anyone else in the area finding good gyms for it?

@A4tech, I am also in Houston! What gym are you using? I have been struggling to find one with good racks and platforms that does not mind deadlifts. I am currently at a 24-hour fitness but it is not ideal.

I am not in Texas but I wanted to chime in and say SS is solid. Make sure you are really focusing on form, especially when the weights get heavy. That is where most people go wrong.

@Alexandoy, you are absolutely right about form. I cannot stress this enough. I filmed myself constantly when I started. It really helps you spot those small errors before they become big problems. What cues do you find most helpful for beginners on the squat?

@Dragustav, for squats, I always tell people "chest up" and "knees out". Also, cueing them to think about "sitting back" rather than just straight down. Filming is an excellent tip, by the way!

@Alexandoy, "knees out" is definitely a game-changer for many beginners. It helps activate the glutes and keeps the hips engaged. I also like to tell people to imagine pushing the floor apart with their feet.

@Dragustav, that is another excellent cue! "Pushing the floor apart" creates that external rotation and really cements the "knees out" concept. It is all about finding what clicks for each individual.

@Alexandoy, exactly! Sometimes a slightly different phrasing makes all the difference. I also think the concept of "tightness" throughout the entire lift, from setup to lockout, is crucial for SS.

Hello fellow lifters! I am a coach in Dallas and I occasionally have clients on Starting Strength. It is a great foundational program. For those in Texas, look for powerlifting gyms or strength-focused CrossFit boxes that offer open gym time. They often have better equipment for the main lifts.

I started SS about a year ago and it transformed my training. I am in Austin, Texas. There are a few good places here, but many commercial gyms do not have proper barbells or enough plates. Finding a dedicated weightlifting space makes a huge difference.

I am in San Antonio and I have been doing Starting Strength for three months. My strength has gone up considerably. The hardest part for me was getting past the initial soreness and sticking to the linear progression. It is tough but rewarding.

@Jayne_Scott, that initial soreness is brutal! I remember thinking I had made a terrible mistake on day two. But you are right, pushing through it is worth it. What kind of progress are you seeing on your main lifts?

@AnimalLifter, for sure! The first week was a real test of willpower. My squat is up from 95lbs to 175lbs, deadlift from 135lbs to 235lbs, and bench from 75lbs to 120lbs. All for sets of 5. It feels amazing!

@Jayne_Scott, those are excellent numbers for three months! Keep up the great work. Have you hit any plateaus yet, or is the linear progression still going strong?

Has anyone found a good online coach who specialises in SS that is based in Texas? Sometimes a few in-person sessions can really dial in form, even if you are mostly self-coaching.

I know the book advocates against too much accessory work, but has anyone successfully integrated a little extra volume, maybe for arms or core, without derailing the main progression? I am a few months in and feeling good.

I am not in Texas but I am following this thread closely. I have been considering Starting Strength for myself. The linear progression seems very appealing for a beginner.

I am in El Paso and I go to a small independent gym that is perfect for SS. No frills, just barbells, plates, and racks. It is sometimes hard to find those gems among all the globo gyms.

Anyone using the Starting Strength app to log their workouts? I find it super helpful for tracking progression and calculating weights. It also has videos for form checks.

I am a relatively new lifter in Houston. I have just started reading the SS book. It feels a bit overwhelming with all the technical details, but also very thorough. Looking forward to putting it into practice.

For anyone starting out, do not be afraid to deload if you stall or your form breaks down. It is part of the process, especially on SS. Sometimes taking a small step back lets you make bigger leaps forward.
