I have been tracking progress with friends using Strava challenges and it has been a game changer for my cycling. We set a monthly elevation goal and a total distance goal. Seeing the leaderboard every morning makes me want to get out on my bike even when it is windy.

The friendly competition is exactly what I needed to push past my plateau. We also comment on each other rides and give kudos, which feels great. It makes the whole process feel much more social and less like a chore.

Do you use Strava for anything other than just recording your activities? I am curious if people find the segments and challenges helpful for motivation. I am currently trying to take a Local Legend title in my neighborhood!

That's awesome, CyclingCyclist! I've been thinking about getting my running group onto Strava challenges. Do you find the elevation goal more motivating than just distance?

Totally agree. Strava challenges are a game changer. My friends and I do a weekly 'most active minutes' challenge. It gets everyone moving, not just the hardcore cyclists/runners. 💪

@Push50 For cycling, elevation is definitely more motivating for us. It adds a whole different dimension, makes you seek out hills! Plus, it feels like a bigger accomplishment sometimes. ⛰️

I tried a Strava challenge once, but it felt like too much pressure. I prefer just tracking my own progress without the competitive aspect. Each to their own, I guess.

@ActiveDrew, that's a brilliant idea! 'Most active minutes' is super inclusive. We've got a mixed group with different fitness levels, so that would work better than pure distance or speed. Thanks for the tip! 🙌

My gym crew does custom Strava segments as challenges. It's awesome for friendly rivalry on local routes. Nothing beats chasing a KOM against your mates! 🚀

I can see the appeal of elevation goals for cycling, @MuscleMeccaCrew. It forces you to change up your routes and definitely builds strength. For running, maybe 'total vertical gain' could be a thing too. 🤔

@Jayne_Scott, no worries! It really evens the playing field. Someone doing a long walk counts just as much as someone doing a short, intense run. It's all about consistent movement. Works for us! 💯

The accountability factor is huge. Knowing your mates are watching (and you're watching them) pushes you on those days you'd rather stay on the sofa. Especially when it's cold outside. 🥶

@ZenAthlete I hear you, the pressure can be real. Sometimes a little competition helps, other times it just feels like another chore. It really depends on your mindset and the group you're with.

We use the Strava club feature to post weekly challenges and share photos. It's not just about the stats; it's the community aspect that truly keeps us engaged. Seeing everyone's efforts is inspiring. ❤️

@ArnoldS, absolutely! I've definitely pushed through a few rainy runs just because I knew my buddy was already out there clocking miles. That friendly competition is invaluable for staying consistent. 💪

Anyone else think Strava's premium features for challenges are a bit pricey? There must be free alternatives for group tracking, right? Or am I just cheap? 😂

Oh, chasing KOMs and QOMs on segments is next level! @BikeLifeMTL, that's where the real competitive spirit comes out. Nothing like seeing your name at the top, even for a day. 🔥

I've heard of people using fitness trackers that sync to a shared spreadsheet for challenges. It's more manual but totally free. Might be worth looking into if the Strava cost is a barrier.

@jimmywells1988, for sure! There are days I'm dragging and see a notification that my mate just crushed a huge ride, and I'm like 'nope, gotta go!' It's the best kind of peer pressure.

I actually prefer smaller, private challenges with just 2-3 close friends. Bigger groups can feel overwhelming, and it's easier to slip under the radar. Keeping it tight keeps me accountable.

@CoachCelestine, the club feature is brilliant for that! We share funny stories from our runs and give kudos for PBs. It builds such a strong sense of camaraderie. It's more than just data. 🫂

My biggest challenge with Strava is remembering to hit 'start' and 'stop' on my runs. Half the time I forget to record! My friends think I'm slacking when really I just have a terrible memory. 😅
