The Best Jump Ropes for Cardio at Home on Carpet
Hey everyone, I'm trying to move my cardio indoors because the weather in Ohio is currently a mess. I have thick carpet in my spare room—what are the best jump ropes for this? I'm worried about the friction slowing the rope down or just ruining the rug. Any tips?
I've got a similar setup in my flat in London. Honestly, skipping on carpet is a bit of a nightmare for the rope's lifespan. I'd highly recommend a weighted PVC rope. Avoid the thin steel speed ropes; they snag on the fibres and it's incredibly frustrating.
Totally agree with LondonLad. I'm in Toronto and use a 1/2lb weighted rope from Crossrope. The extra weight helps it clear the carpet pile much easier than those light gym class ropes.
Have you considered getting a small mat to put over the carpet? Even a cheap yoga mat or a piece of plywood helps. I tried jumping straight on carpet here in Texas and the static shocks were driving me crazy lol.
Static shocks? I didn't even think about that! Is that a common thing? @TXguy99
It is if the air is dry! I'm out in Vancouver where it's damp, so less of an issue, but the carpet still creates a lot of drag. I use a beaded rope. The plastic beads glide over the carpet better than bare PVC or wire.
Beaded ropes are great for beginners too. I find the feedback helps with timing when the surface isn't perfectly flat like a gym floor.
Beaded is a shout, but they can be a bit noisy if you have neighbours downstairs. If you're in a house it's fine, but in a flat, the 'clack-clack' on the carpet/floor can be annoying.
It's my own basement, so noise isn't a huge deal. VancouverDave, any specific brand for the beaded one? Or are they all mostly the same?
I use a 'Buy Jump Ropes' brand one I got off Amazon. Cheap and cheerful. Just make sure the beads are shatterproof polymer, otherwise they'll crack after a few sessions.
Seriously though Mike, look into a 3x4ft equipment mat. It'll save your carpet from getting 'burnt' by the rope friction. My wife almost killed me when she saw the marks I left on our rug.
Actually, a heavy rubber mat on top of carpet can be a bit unstable. Does anyone find it moves around too much during double-unders?
I use a hard plastic chair mat—the kind people use for office desks. It stays put on the carpet because of the little spikes on the bottom and provides a perfectly smooth surface for a speed rope.
The office mat idea is genius! That solves the friction and the stability issue. Thanks @NorthernLass!
Just be careful of your ankles. Jumping on a hard mat that's sitting on a soft carpet can be a bit 'spongy'. Don't want any twisted ankles before summer!
Good point. If the carpet is really plush, the mat might tilt. Just keep an eye on it.
I'll give the beaded rope + office mat a go and report back. Appreciate the help, everyone! This forum is a lifesaver.
