Slingshot Original vs Maddog for Bench Press Overload
Been using the Slingshot Original for months now for my overload days. It's great for getting used to heavier weight off the chest, definitely helps with confidence. But I'm hearing chatter about the Maddog being even more aggressive? Anyone tried both for bench?
The Maddog is a beast, no doubt. I switched from the Original to the Maddog a while back. The Maddog definitely gives you more 'pop' out of the hole, but it's also a lot tighter and takes some getting used to. If your form isn't solid, it can feel a bit unwieldy. Original is more forgiving.
I'm a big fan of the Original for warm-ups and general volume work. Keeps the shoulders safe and lets me push a bit harder without feeling like I'm gonna tear something. Never tried the Maddog, kinda scared it'll mess with my natural arch too much.
@BenchBro, I've used both extensively. The Original is fantastic for general bench assistance, but if you're looking for true overload to push past sticking points, the Maddog is in a different league. It's a proper struggle to get into, but the carryover to raw strength is undeniable. Just don't rely on it too much.
Is anyone using these for regular training or just for max effort days? I'm thinking of incorporating one into my weekly routine for a few sets, but not sure if it's overkill or could actually help with consistent progressive overload.
@Alexandoy, when you say 'unwieldy', what do you mean specifically? Does it throw off the bar path or make it hard to control the eccentric? My form is decent, but I'm always cautious about anything that might compromise it.
Just to throw a spanner in the works, has anyone considered the Super Slingshot? I hear it's a good middle ground between the Original and the Maddog if you want more assistance than the Original but aren't quite ready for the Maddog's intensity.
@GymRatJess, I felt the same, but the Maddog doesn't necessarily mess with your arch. It just forces you to be super tight and drive hard. If you're relying too much on the sling for the lift, it can feel weird, but if you're still doing most of the work, it just provides that extra push.
Honestly, for raw strength building, nothing beats just getting stronger. Slingshots are cool tools but they're not magic. Focus on technique and consistency first. Overload is useful, but not if it's masking weaknesses.
I cycle through them. Original for speed work and lighter loads, Maddog for 1-2 heavy sets to get a feel for max weight. The Super Slingshot is indeed a solid option if you're not sure about the Maddog. Gives a good boost without being overly restrictive.
The main difference between the Original and Maddog is the stiffness and thickness of the material. Maddog is much stiffer, providing more rebound. Think of it as a higher-ply bench shirt for raw lifters. It definitely adds more pounds to the bar.
For anyone debating, consider your current bench max. If you're a beginner or intermediate, the Original is more than enough. If you're pushing serious weight (e.g., 350lbs+), then the Maddog might give you that extra edge for overload work.
It really comes down to your goals. For powerlifting prep and pushing maxes, the Maddog is probably better. For general strength training, rehabilitation, or just being able to lift heavy comfortably, the Original is superior. Don't overcomplicate it.
I agree with @TheSpotter. These are aids, not substitutes for actual strength. They can be good for confidence or specific technique work, but you won't magically add 50lbs to your raw bench just by wearing one. Use them wisely.
I've seen some guys at my gym use the Maddog and it looks like a real struggle to get on. If you're not planning on competing in equipped powerlifting, the Original is more than enough for a good training stimulus.
For me, the Maddog helped me break through a mental barrier. I could 'feel' the heavier weight and realized I could handle it. The carryover to my raw max wasn't huge immediately, but it built confidence and that's half the battle.
Just got the Maddog last week. Initial thoughts: it's brutal but effective. Definitely adds an extra 10-15kg to my working sets. You gotta be ready for the fight though. Not for the faint of heart.
If you're strictly going for max weight on the bar, Maddog every time. If you want something for general training, warm-ups, or minor assistance with shoulder health, stick with the Original. Simple as that.
