Protein Carb Fat Ratio for Fat Loss vs Bulking

I am starting a new phase in my training and I am wondering about the best macro split. For fat loss I have usually done high protein and low carb but I find that I have no energy for my hockey games here in Vancouver when I do that.
Now that I am transitioning into a lean bulk I want to know if I should keep the protein high or focus more on carbohydrates for performance. I am currently 185 pounds and aiming for a 300 calorie surplus.
What ratios have worked best for you guys? I see some people doing 40 percent protein while others say 0.8 grams per pound of bodyweight is enough. I do not want to waste money on protein powder if I do not need it.
