Low Bar vs High Bar Squat for Maximum Strength
I have always been a high bar squatter because that is how I was taught back in high school. However I am seeing all the big powerlifters at my gym using the low bar position and they keep telling me I could lift more weight if I switched.
I tried it once and it felt incredibly awkward on my wrists and shoulders. I also felt like I was folding in half during the descent. Is the learning curve for low bar really worth it for the potential strength gains? I want to be as strong as possible but I also enjoy the more upright posture of the high bar squat.
Does anyone here squat more with high bar than low bar? I am curious if there is a specific body type that just does not suit the low bar position. I would hate to spend months relearning a movement only to find out it does not work for me.
