I am new to lifting and I am constantly in pain. I am trying to learn how to tell the difference between muscle soreness and injury. Sometimes I feel like I can barely move the next day but I am not sure if that is just a normal part of the process or if I am actually hurting myself.

The pain usually feels like a dull ache in the middle of the muscle but sometimes I get a sharp pinch near my joints. I have heard that DOMS usually peaks around two days after a workout and then fades away. I am worried that I might be ignoring something serious because I am trying to be tough and push through it.

What are the red flags that I should be looking for? I want to stay consistent with my training but I do not want to end up with a tear or a strain that sets me back for months. I would appreciate any advice on how to listen to my body and when it is okay to train through some discomfort vs when I need to rest.
