I live in a small flat in Manchester and I really miss having a garden. I have decided to try and grow some of my own vegetables this year using my balcony and windowsills. I have no idea where to start though.

I have seen those Aerogarden kits online that use hydroponics. They look cool but they are a bit pricey. I am wondering if I can just use regular pots and some good soil. I am worried about the plants not getting enough sunlight since it is always cloudy here.

Can you actually grow things like tomatoes or peppers indoors? I have managed to keep some basil alive for a few weeks but that is about it. I would love to be able to make a salad with things I grew myself.

If any other city dwellers have successfully started a mini farm in their apartment, please share your secrets. What are the easiest things to grow for a total beginner?
