I have been thinking about starting a beehive in my backyard for a while now. I love the idea of having my own honey and helping the local bee population. I have a decent-sized yard in the suburbs of Austin, but I am not sure if my neighbors will be happy about it.

What is the basic equipment I need to get started? I have seen some starter kits online that include the hive, a suit, and tools. Are those a good deal or should I buy everything separately? I also need to know where to actually buy the bees.

I am a bit nervous about getting stung, although I have heard that honeybees are generally pretty docile if you know what you are doing. Is it hard to keep the hive healthy? I have read about colony collapse and it seems a bit daunting for a beginner.

If there are any experienced beekeepers here, I would love some advice on the first few steps. Is it a very time-consuming hobby or something that I can manage on the weekends?
