I have been having some success lately figuring out how to find free weight lifting gear on Craigslist here in Texas. It is amazing what people are willing to give away just to get it out of their house. I recently picked up a whole set of iron plates and a bench for absolutely nothing.

The key is to check the free section multiple times a day and be ready to move fast. You also need a truck or a large car because most people will not hold items for you. I have found that being polite and reliable goes a long way when you are dealing with sellers.
