How to Clean and Maintain Your Knee Sleeves to Avoid Smell

My knee sleeves are starting to smell like a locker room and it is getting embarrassing. I have been using them for three months and I usually just throw them in my gym bag after a workout. I have heard that you should wash them in the sink with mild soap but I am worried about them losing their elasticity.

I want to know how to clean and maintain your knee sleeves to avoid that awful smell without ruining the material. I have seen some people say you can put them in the washing machine on a cold cycle but I am hesitant. Is there a specific detergent that works best for neoprene?

I also want to know how often you all wash your gear. I do not want to be that person in the gym that everyone avoids because of the odor. If you have a routine for keeping your sleeves fresh and clean please share it with me.
