I see everyone at the gym rolling around on these foam cylinders and I am starting to wonder does foam rolling actually help muscle recovery or is it just a placebo effect. I have read some conflicting studies about whether it actually breaks up adhesions or if it just desensitizes the nervous system to pain.

I have tried it a few times and it definitely hurts like crazy while I am doing it. I am not sure if I feel any better the next day though. I want to spend my time on things that actually provide a return on investment for my health. If it is just a temporary relief of tension then maybe I should focus on something else.

What has your experience been with foam rolling over the long term? Have you noticed fewer injuries or faster recovery times? I am interested in the real world results from people who use them consistently. I do not want to follow a trend if the science is not there.
