I am comparing 1 inch versus 2 inch weight plates for home use. I currently have a lot of the older 1 inch standard plates but I am thinking about upgrading to an Olympic 2 inch setup. I want to know if the extra cost is actually worth it for a casual lifter.

The 2 inch bars seem much more robust and I love the idea of being able to use bumper plates eventually. However I already have about four hundred pounds of the 1 inch plates and it feels like a waste to just get rid of them.

Do you think it is better to just stick with what I have or should I make the jump now before I buy even more gear? I am based in Illinois and it is quite easy to find 1 inch stuff for free but the 2 inch gear is much more expensive. Let me know your advice!
