Best Smart Home Security Systems for Renters in 2026
I just moved into a new apartment in Chicago and the neighborhood is okay, but I would feel much better with some security. Since I am renting, I cannot drill holes or do any permanent wiring. I need a system that is totally wireless and easy to remove when I move out.
I have been looking at Ring and SimpliSafe. Both seem to have good entry-level kits that just stick to the walls. I am curious about the monthly monitoring fees though. Is it worth paying for the professional monitoring or should I just rely on phone notifications?
I also want a doorbell camera that does not require existing wiring. I have heard the battery-powered ones are good but need charging every few months. Has anyone had issues with theirs being stolen or failing in the cold?
I would love to hear what other renters are using to feel safe. I want something that is reliable but does not break the bank on a monthly basis.
