I have been dealing with some nagging shin splints and my coach suggested I swap one of my easy runs for a pool session. I am curious about the benefits of swimming as active recovery for runners. It seems like a great way to get some cardio in without the constant pounding on the pavement.

I went for a few laps yesterday and I definitely felt like my legs were less stiff afterwards. I am wondering if I should focus on a specific stroke like the breaststroke or if I should just use a kickboard for some light leg work. I am in the UK and my local leisure centre has a great pool that I should probably use more often.

Has anyone else made swimming a regular part of their running recovery? I am worried about losing my running fitness but I know that I need to let my joints heal. I would love to hear how you structure your pool days and if it has helped your running performance long term.
