Are Ammonia Sport Smelling Salts Safe for Max Attempts
I use smelling salts for every max attempt, sometimes even for heavy warm-ups. They definitely give you that jolt you need. But I have wondered about long-term safety. Are there any actual studies on this? π€
They are generally safe if used correctly. The main concern is not inhaling too deeply or too frequently, which can irritate nasal passages. It is a vasoconstrictor, so it boosts alertness temporarily. Do not rely on it as a crutch. πͺ
From a coaching perspective, I tell my athletes to use them sparingly. They are a tool, not a substitute for proper mental preparation and technique. Over-reliance can lead to ignoring fatigue signals, which is dangerous. Prioritise form and recovery first. π―
My biggest lift ever was after a good whiff. Felt like I could lift a car. But honestly, it is probably 80% mental placebo effect for me. That sharp smell just snaps you into focus. Anyone else feel it is more psychological? π§
I have seen some lifters literally fall over after a huge hit of salts. That can not be good for your brain. I stick to pre-workout and good music. Safer bet, in my opinion. π«
For competitive powerlifting, they are almost mandatory for some lifters at meets. The atmosphere, the lights, the pressure... a whiff helps cut through it all. Safety is a concern, but in a controlled environment, it is low risk for that one big lift. π
I am a bit sensitive to strong smells, so I avoid them. I have found a strong cup of black coffee about 30 minutes before my heaviest sets works well enough for me. No need for the harsh chemicals. β
My doc said as long as you do not have any respiratory issues or heart conditions, occasional use is fine. The key is OCCASIONAL. Not every training session. It is a shock to the system, use it wisely. π©Ί
I find them useful for breaking through mental barriers. Sometimes you know you can lift it, but your mind is playing tricks. A quick blast of ammonia clears the mental fog and lets you attack the weight. π
Just a reminder to everyone: if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, especially respiratory or cardiovascular, please consult with your doctor before using any stimulating products, including ammonia salts. Your health is paramount. β€οΈ
@admin, that is an important reminder. Safety first, always. It is easy to get caught up in chasing numbers, but not at the expense of well-being. Good looking out! π
My coach always says if you need salts to hit a PR, you probably did not train hard enough or recover properly. It is a band-aid. Focus on consistent effort, progressive overload, and solid nutrition. No shortcuts. ππ΄
@SweatLovin, I respectfully disagree. Sometimes you are physically ready, but mentally you are just not "there". Salts can bridge that gap. It is not about lack of training, it is about that final mental ignition. Not a band-aid, but a spark. β¨
I have tried them a few times, and they do work. The headache afterwards is not worth it for me though. I get a real pounding behind my eyes. Anyone else experience that or am I just sensitive? π€
@Lurkers, I get that headache too if I take too big a whiff! It is probably from the sudden rush of blood pressure or just the intense sensory input. Try a much lighter sniff next time, just enough to get the jolt without the pain. If it persists, definitely stop. π
